Assessment of Reading in the Classroom
Reading
comprehension is recognized as a key instructional goal
in state accountability systems. However, upper elementary
and Language Arts middle school teachers often have
not had the coursework or on-the-job professional development
that helps them think of themselves as reading teachers
in the broadest sense. In responding to the need to
help teachers articulate clearer instructional goals
in reading comprehension and use data from their classrooms
to inform instructional needs, SERVE offers three resources
for teachers and professional developers. For more information
on any of these resources, contact Nancy McMunn at 800-755-3277.

- Competent
Assessment of Reading—CAR Toolkit for Professional
Developers.
This
toolkit is a collection of numerous professional development
activities focusing on the assessment of reading. It is
designed for professional developers at the school or
district level to use as a resource as they work with
teachers on how to use reading assessment. The activities
were developed using third through sixth grade teachers.
The resource is structured into three basic sections,
each is designed to give teachers practice in an important
aspect of reading assessment: namely as a lifelong reader,
as an assessor, and as an action researcher. The toolkit
includes a how-to video demonstrating two formative assessment
methods.
- Tools
for Providing Feedback in Reading: A Reading Assessment
Handbook for All Teachers in Grades 3–12.
This
65 page Reading Assessment Handbook can be used as an
independent resource for any teacher wanting to improve
assessment methods and strategies in reading instruction.
This handbook is a very practical resource that provides
easy-to-use assessment methods and reading strategies
that teachers can read about and use in their classrooms.
This handbook is a revised version of a North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction Handbook (called
Reading: Assessing the Strategies, Comprehension, and
Characteristics of Middle and High School Students).
- Competent
Assessment of Reading (CAR) Professional Development
Program.
SERVE
has also developed a comprehensive, structured, year-long
professional development program geared toward middle
grades Language Arts teachers. The 30 hours of piloted,
highly organized staff development materials are intended
for use by school-based literacy coaches and district
professional developers as they work with teachers to
improve their knowledge and use of reading assessment.
A train-the-trainers workshop for literacy coaches and
district reading specialists who work with teachers will
be held in the summer of 2005. Look here for a more detailed
description of the CAR
structure.
