Linking Assessment and Student Motivation

In this 1-day session, the focus is on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Activities help familiarize participants with foundational and current research on student motivation. Assessment methods that enhance student motivation are introduced and participants are guided through the process of writing an action plan to address student motivation problems within the classroom, using their newly gained knowledge of motivation research and assessment.

Diverse Assessments for Diverse Learners

This 1-day training session defines and explores the use of different types of performance assessments with an emphasis on fairness, equity, and bias. Paricipants are given the opportunity to critique sample performance assessments. Links to Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences are explored in order to create diverse assessments for diverse learners and to ultimately encourage critical thinking skills.

Involving Students in Assessment

This 1-day training session explores four venues for involving students in assessment: encouraging student participation in rubric creation, peer and self-assessment activities, student-involved conferences, and senior projects. Participants receive practical advice and instruction on implementing these four venues into their own classroom assessment practices.

Collecting and Analyzing Assessment Data

This 1-day training session emphasizes the need for multiple measures and diverse assessment methods to create quality profiles of student achievement. Participants practice analyzing sample data and then design strategies to address student needs through instructional modifications.

Examining Grading and Reporting Practices

In this 4-day training session, participants learn the history of grading, examine educational research delineating positive and negative impacts of grading on students and reflect on their own grading practices. Major emphasis is given to differentiating formative and summative assessment and to helping instructors implement a grading system that reliably reports student achievement.

Creating an Assessment Vision

This 2-day session deals with change and is aimed at facilitating the development of a district/school plan around an initiative in classroom assessment. Emphasis is placed on team building and collaboration, as essential qualities needed by schools/districts to begin developing an assessment vision. Participants design an action plan and set a timetable of events that will move them towards a vision for a quality classroom assessment environment.
