Expanded
Language Learners (ELLs)
It
is estimated that by the year 2030, almost half of
all school-age children will be English language learners
(ELLs). According to the National Clearinghouse for
English Language Acquisition, there are almost 300,000
ELLs in Florida, and the number of students for whom
English is not their first language in the other southeastern
states is growing exponentially. Now, more than ever,
educators must strive to develop quality instructional
theory and practice to teach diverse learners and
to ensure that high academic standards are supported
for all children. To address the needs of ELL students
and teachers, SERVE conducts research, conducts trainings,
and provides assistance throughout the Southeast.
