Quality expanded learning opportunities
(ELO) programs can markedly increase engagement in learning by providing students with opportunities to participate in
hands-on activities that allow them to develop and enhance both social and academic skills. Providing students with these
opportunities has long-term impacts. Students who are engaged in learning behave better in school and have better work habits,
higher educational aspirations, improved attitudes toward school, a greater sense of belonging in the community, and better
relationships with parents.
Our goal is to promote an understanding of how to establish and maintain high-quality school-age ELOs. This goal is achieved
by conducting and disseminating research, providing technical assistance, and building capacity amongst ELO providers. Additionally,
the School Age Project encourages and supports collaboration with stakeholders and assists schools and school systems in identifying
and developing programs and strategies to close the achievement gap.
SERVE understands that in order to ensure that all students and families have access to high-quality programs, activities, and
opportunities during non-school hours, programs need to have a link between research and practice.
