There is currently
a great national emphasis on improving schools and increasing student
achievement. The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001
sets high standards for student performance and outlines consequences
for schools failing to meet the standards. SERVE offers a wide variety
of publications, products, and services in the area of school reform
and improvement, and the four areas described below provide a representative
cross-section of our response to the need within our region's
schools, especially low-performing ones, to meet the requirements
of NCLB.
Smaller Learning Communities are federally funded programs that work to restructure and redesign large high schools in order to increase student achievement by enhancing classroom rigor and relevance, stimulating student/teacher interactions, and better preparing matriculating students for post-graduation goals. By implementing structures and strategies that aim to create smaller learning communities, districts and schools can increase student performance and the quality of relationships between teachers, students, administrators, and the larger community.
SERVE staff act as grant monitors, technical assistance providers, and liaisons between the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) and districts awarded funding as authorized by The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Title V, Part D, Subpart 4 and The Elementary and Secondary Education Act as reauthorized by the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994, Title X, Part A, Section 10105.
