An effective and energized advocate for at-risk children, Jan works at the SERVE Center in the National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE). Through her consistent and dedicated work, Jan makes innumerable valuable contributions to the SERVE Center. One of those contributions is answering the NCHE helpline. In this activity, Jan assists staff of state departments of education, staff of school districts, parents, and youth living on their own with issues related to homeless and highly mobile students enrolling and succeeding in school. In addition to answering the NCHE helpline, Jan also writes, compiles, and distributes research relating to education for children and youth experiencing homelessness.
Jan came to the SERVE Center in May 2000. She spent four years as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director and has worked in the NCHE for the last five years. Jan has a background in juvenile justice and child welfare that has informed and enhanced her work at the SERVE Center and the NCHE. She holds an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice from Davidson County Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from North Carolina State University, and a Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
In her free time, Jan enjoys Bible studies, bicycling, and volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem.
