Afterschool Programs Program: Kenosha Unified School District Location: Kenosha, WI Contact: Fran Anderson, Teacher of the Homeless Phone: (262) 658-1713, extension 117 Program Description: This program serves students living in a local homeless shelter and a local transitional living program. The program is divided into two 1 1/2 hour segments. During the first segment, the children receive one-on-one assistance from a volunteer tutor. This time consists of completing homework and receiving tutoring in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students are often able to improve two grade levels in reading if they remain in the program for three months. Participants also demonstrate dramatic improvement in writing and math. During the second segment, the children participate in a group lesson and activity and have guided play time. |
