Educator Quality

Research reveals that expert teaching is one of the single greatest influences on student achievement. To fulfill the promise of No Child Left Behind, the profession must improve its capacity to develop, sustain, and retain quality teachers and principals. This section of SERVE's website provides you with information and resources on improving educator quality.

Expanded Learning Opportunities

As school reform efforts continue, many low-performing schools are still having difficulty and the achievement gap persists. Expanded Learning Opportunities includes a wide variety of programs that provide additional support for student learning. While the formats and characteristics of these programs vary, they are all aimed at providing specific groups of students additional support. In this topic area, you will find information and resources on the various types of expanded learning resources throughout SERVE.

Policy and Legislation

The Education Policy Program supports SERVE’s mission to improve the quality of education for all learners by providing neutral, research-based policy services to State Boards and State Superintendents of Education and their staff.

School and District Improvement

There is currently a great national emphasis on improving schools and increasing student achievement. The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 sets high standards for student performance and outlines consequences for schools failing to meet the standards. SERVE offers a wide variety of publications, products, and services in the area of school reform and improvement, and the four areas described below provide a representative cross-section of our response to the need within our region's schools, especially low-performing ones, to meet the requirements of NCLB.

Technology in Learning

SERVE's program on Technology in Learning focuses on improving the processes of teaching and learning through the use of emerging electronic technologies, including computers, the Internet, telecommunications, and software applications. Technology in Learning staff conducts research and development in strategies, methods, and materials and provides technical assistance and professional development to state education agencies, districts, and schools as well as to educators in other settings.
